There are also some explanations to the rhythm
notation used here.
Larry's disclaimer: the world of 'traditional
rhythm' is constantly evolving. Some transcriptions here will be 'neotraditional'
at best, westernized versions of African rhythms, or 'old' styles not
often heard now, and frankly, some will simply be wrong. Corrections and
new additions are welcomed and appreciated; please attribute where possible.
Recognize that names are mutable, and often represent styles or even origin
tribes rather than specific compositions. These transcriptions omit chant
and dance, which are often integral. Use this as a map for connecting
beginning rhythms together, not as a substitute for study with a competent
teacher. Enjoy!
